As you can read in any maternity blog, you should not stop taking care of yourself after giving birth, that is why we will give you some advice on how to take care of yourself and face these changes so that your postpartum period is more bearable and healthy.
Main Postpartum Care
Some mothers recover faster than others, however, care is valid for all. Here is our guide:
- Visits: Everyone wants to meet the new baby, however, we recommend that you take the first few days to rest and adapt to the changes.
- Long nights: Your baby will ask you to eat every 3 or 4 hours, which could wake you up throughout the night, we advise you to sleep when he does. Rest for both is essential.
- Swollen feet: Just like when you were pregnant, you may have swelling in your feet. The best remedy is to keep them elevated for as long as possible.
- Constipation: To avoid constipation, walk slowly even at home. This will help you regularize your body. You can also drink water and eat foods with fiber.
- Episiotomy: If your birth was normal, you should have a wound in the perineum called an “episiotomy”, which prevents a tear at the time of giving birth and is a little painful and uncomfortable. You should ask your doctor about the care required to prevent infection.
- Cesarean section: If your birth was by cesarean section, the recovery is a little slower. It is advisable to walk to avoid filling with gas and clean the wound as advised by your doctor.
- Breast care: You should keep your breasts dry but hydrated, as breastfeeding can crack them. There are recommended creams that you can use without affecting your baby.
- Libido: It is normal for your libido to drop a little, due to fatigue and hormonal changes, but don't worry, you will slowly recover it.
- Mood changes: You will notice that sometimes you are happy and suddenly you want to cry... It's normal! Remember that your body is going through many changes that affect your behavior and habits. Don't worry and be patient, all this will soon disappear.
Exercises? Of course!
Playing sports will help you regain your figure and relax you. You should start with a gentle routine depending on the type of birth you have had. We advise you to start with Pilates and yoga. Walking is also essential for your health. You could do it with your partner and your baby, strengthening family ties.
If you follow these useful and practical tips, you will soon be able to recover to enjoy those delicious moments with your new family.
